Placement Testing

The UMF Learning Assistance Center administers placement tests in mathematics and writing. These tests are designed to ensure that students meet minimum competencies in basic skills areas. Test results assist faculty advisors in assuring early and accurate placement of students in appropriate courses.

Who takes the placement tests?

Scores on standardized tests are reviewed by the Admission Office to identify those students who may be underprepared for college level math or writing courses. Students who score below 490 on the writing portion of the new SAT Reasoning Test (or below 490 on the verbal section of the old SAT1) or below 450 on the math section of the new SAT Reasoning Test (or the old SAT1), or students who do not provide test scores, will be required to take the placement tests.

When should the tests be taken?

Tests must be taken prior to registering for classes so that test results can be used for proper placement into composition and mathematics courses. Testing is offered on designated test dates and by appointment throughout the school year and summer.

What do the placement tests include?

Writing

Students have 50 minutes to write an essay on a selected topic. A panel of UMF faculty members will read each essay looking for logical and meaningful development of ideas, as well as clear sentence and paragraph structure.

Mathematics

Students have 40 minutes to answer 38 multiple choice questions ranging from arithmetic to intermediate algebra. A sample math placement test is available from the Learning Assistance Center upon request.
